When summer arrives, your own outside deck should be the first place you should think of retiring to when it's time to relax and unwind. It's something that normally creates an atmosphere for pure relaxation, where family and friends can spend some quality time together.

When it comes to choosing a deck for your home, there are a lot of things to consider. You could choose from a range of wood types and finishes to match your home or you could take a look at some examples and make some adjustments accordingly.

It is important to choose the right materials for your deck. Poor inferior quality wood and finishing's could lead to an unhappy and sometimes hazardous home, especially when it comes to small children. Not to mention the eyesore it can cause if not done properly.

Redwood is definitely a good raw material to use for your outside deck. Not only is the quality of a high standard but its stability is quite remarkable. It does not reach so harshly to varying weather conditions such as moisture conditions where the wood could possible swell or shrink and also has a high resistance to common problems such as bending and warping.

It's always a good idea to take a look around at other decks that have been around for a while to see what happens to the various materials used after time and weathering. Things such as rusting of fasteners, warping, cupping, swelling and cracking are just a few of the things to look out for.

When building your own deck there are a few tips you should take into account, such as starting your deck straight from the wall and extend it towards the traditional yard. Make sure that all the pieces you start with sit flat in line with the wall you start from because this could affect the look and you should leave a small gap for the water to drain off.

When building long or wide decks it is always a good idea to try purchase pieces that extent across the entire area to avoid doubling up, which could cause trouble in the long run. The problem with end on end pieces is that after time the meeting point could sometimes become uneven and could also cause splintering.

There are circumstances where it may not be possible to get pieces long enough. In this instance you need to be careful because normally pieces over fourteen inches tend to be crooked. When using two pieces be sure to join them directly over the center of the underlying joist support. This provides nailing support for both pieces and gives you a better chance of long life stability and symmetry. Also make sure you stagger the pieces so that every second join is in the center over the same joist.

When nailing the pieces for the deck and securing them, you should never use ordinary finishing nails. Instead you should use counter sink screws and plugs. This ensures that no nail is able to pop up and cause surface rust as well as been a hazard.

It is good practice and should be normal when nailing, to do so in a straight line marked out with a chalk string preferably. This complement's to the symmetry and neatness of the job while ensuring a good solid structure that looks good and is solid and secure.

Keep in mind that no board is perfect and many pieces might have slight bow and bends that need to be set straight. It's a bit of work in progress, but with a little effort it is possible to straighten out all those nooks and crannies. Just remember, a well-groomed horse will always look good when it counts.

Just as important as the straightness of your pieces is the uniform spacing you need to employ when building your deck. It is always a good idea to create wooden spacers of uniform width to use between each piece to ensure uniformity.
